Michael Maiolo, born February 13th 1988, has been singing since the tender age of 7. Having been to many different singing, dancing and acting schools, Michael chose the path of being a performer as his career. Having recorded his first album, ‘I’m What You Want’ in 2006, Michael had the opportunity to participated in Italy’s prestigious San Remo Festival where he competed against some of the finest singers from Italy.
Upon his return to Australia, Michael began planning the release of his new material; the first release being ‘Infatuated’ in 2009.
Melbourne-born Michael is the son to an Italian father and a Portuguese mother, with such a large extended family and a sister. “I had an extremely good childhood. I have a very large family but grew up mostly with a lot of girls - that’s where my sensitive side comes from and I understand and see things from both a man and a woman’s perspective”, Michael laughs. “My cousins and I used to dress up and make dances to songs and put on concerts; i was the only one who pursued it as a career.”
Michael sung a lot throughout his High School years and would sit in class and write the songs featured on his EP ‘I’m What You Want’ instead of listening to the teachers. “I went to an all boys school which was interesting - being a performer isn't always the best thing at an all boys school but I knew what I wanted and never let anyone stand in the way of my dream; my family have always supported me 100%.” It was this drive that encouraged Michael to stick with his music and work on his song-writing and vocal skills.
“If I wasn’t a singer I would want to be a plastic surgeon”, Michael says. “I love making people look as good as they possibly can. Feeling beautiful is one of the most important things I think; self confidence is the key to life”.
“My first EP ‘I’m What You Want’ was released for some exposure and experience - most of the songs were written by myself because I have always been very good with words and expressing myself. Most of my songs come from experiences I have had and lessons I have learnt in my lifetime.” Michael says. “Experience isn’t measured by age”, says the 21 year old.
Michael was invited to compete in Italy’s San Remo Festival where he reached the Final Rounds. “It was an experience that I would never change. I learnt so much about myself and the Industry on an International level. It is extremely competitive out there and a lot of it has to do with hard work and luck. There is only so much one person can do, that’s why you need to be surrounded by people you love and trust.” Michael speaks of his time in Italy, “I went through highs and lows while I was there. It is hard being in another country, having language barriers, and being away from my family and friends but it really did change me as a person”.
Upon returning to Australia, Michael continued writing and practicing his craft. “It’s hard work when you juggle two jobs, social events, practicing, performing, and all the other things life throws at you but I have chosen this path so I need to work hard”. Michael’s determination comes from his family. ‘My father has his own business and worked hard with my mother to build it up and for it to be successful. I look at them and they inspire me.”
"Cute boys turn heads... I break necks". He's cheeky, exotic, and wants to share his songs with the world. He's influenced by Prince, & JLO and his debut single is described as modern pop with banging bass lines. "Infatuated" is about the rush of blood and the pulsating beat of the heart, when two people come together for the first time.
